Ready to improve your English language proficiency? Gain confidence in your academic writing, reading, speaking and listening abilities at Adelphi University. The Intensive English Program is offered through the Adelphi English Language Institute and provides international students with English language courses. These courses are designed to develop English-language skills in the shortest possible time. Students are provided with the tools and resources to improve their communication skills and thrive personally and professionally. This program is available at both Adelphi’s Manhattan Center and Garden City campus.

Program Overview

The Adelphi English Language Institute Intensive English Program provides excellent, well-designed courses to help you build English proficiency at a faster level. We immerse you in learning and cultural experiences to develop English language skills to meet your academic, professional, or personal goals. You will participate in challenging and engaging lessons, developing your ability to communicate in an authentic, real-world environment.

Students may enter the program at the beginning of a university semester (16-week program) or in the middle of the semester (8-week program).

Our ESL instructors are experienced and highly credentialed. Instructors have a Master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) or a Master’s degree with a TESL/TEFL Certificate. To read about our teachers, check out our Meet the Team page.

16-Week English Program

Program Description & Levels

This 16-week English program aligns with the university semester. Students are prepared to listen, speak, read and write English proficiently. The Core English language curriculum consists of seven levels, based on the Common European Framework for Languages (CEFR).

Program Structure

Classes are designed to combine increased proficiency with relevant learning experiences. Students will take*:

7.5 hours of Applied Integrated Skills

7.5 hours of Grammar in Context

5 hours of Special Academic Topics

Total Weekly Classroom Hours = 20

*Schedules may be adapted for the summer semester and/or based on student needs.

Course Details

Students take three hours of core courses daily, focusing on building practical competence in all English language skills. These courses prepare students to participate in their classroom discussions with confidence and write cohesive academic assignments.

  • Applied Integrated Skills courses have an emphasis on academic listening, speaking and reading practice.
  • Grammar in Context courses has an emphasis on grammar and academic writing.
  • Special Academic Topics (SAT) courses focus on a particular language skill or content area.

8-Week English Program

Program Description & Levels

Students who enter the Intensive English Program mid-semester enroll in the 8-Week English program. The program curriculum includes two courses levels: upper and lower.

Program Structure

Courses are designed to combine English instruction with orientation-type activities that support students’ integration into the university. During the program, students will take*:

6 hours of Reading and Writing

6 hours of Speaking and Listening

4 hours of Special Academic Topics (SAT)

2–4 hours of Student Signature Experience

Total Weekly Program Hours = 18–20

*This schedule may be adapted for the summer semester and/or based on student needs.

Course Details

In each level of the program, students will take two English proficiency courses. These courses build students’ language proficiency and orient them to U.S. university study.

  • Reading and Writing has an emphasis on academic reading and writing skills.
  • Speaking and Listening provides the skills to be successful in and out of the classroom.
  • Special Academic Topics (SAT) courses focus on a particular language skill or content area.
  • Student Signature Experience involves a visit to a university or local cultural, academic or historical event or site.

Placement

Once you arrive at Adelphi, you will take an English placement exam. The exam is the online iTEP Academic test. The exam tests students’ abilities in reading comprehension, writing, grammar knowledge, listening comprehension, and speaking. The placement test shows which level is best for a student’s current English proficiency.  Once the test measures your English language skills, you can enter the level that will most effectively help you improve your English.
